You have heard about korfball. You have read about the Korfball Premier League. And now you are asking the most important question of all: how do I actually play?
This guide is for anyone in India who wants to get on a korfball court — whether you are a serious athlete looking for a new competitive outlet, a student wanting to try something different, or someone who has simply never found a sport that felt genuinely inclusive until now.
Here is everything you need to know to get started with korfball in India.
Do I Need Any Prior Experience?
No. This is one of the most important things to understand about korfball as a beginner sport.
Because korfball is a relatively new sport in India, most people who play it — including many who have played for years — started from zero. There is no established pathway that requires years of junior development or elite athletic backgrounds. The sport is genuinely open to new players.
What helps: any background in team sport (football, basketball, netball, handball) will give you a feel for the spatial and passing elements of korfball quickly. General athletic fitness helps. Good coordination helps.
What is not required: physical size, strength, or any specific athletic profile. Korfball's no-contact rule means players of all body types and fitness levels can contribute effectively from early in their development.
Understanding the Basics Before You Start
Before attending a club session or trial, it is worth knowing the fundamental rules so you can focus on playing rather than learning from scratch on the court.
The team: Eight players — four men and four women. Split into two groups of four (two men, two women each). One group attacks, one defends.
The objective: Score by throwing the ball through the korf — a basket on a 3.5-metre post — at the opposing team's end.
No dribbling: You cannot move while holding the ball. Pass and move.
No contact: No tackling, blocking, or physical interference of any kind.
The defended player rule: You cannot shoot if a defender is within arm's reach, facing you, and actively defending. Create space first, then shoot.
Zone switching: After every two goals, attacking and defending groups swap ends.
That is the core of the game. Everything else you will learn on the court.
Finding a Korfball Club in India
Korfball clubs and training groups exist across India, primarily in major cities. The Korfball Federation of India (KFI) is the national governing body and the best starting point for finding organised korfball activity near you.
As the Korfball Premier League launches in 2026, new clubs and training programmes will be established in cities across the country. KPL's grassroots development programme will create more entry points for new players than have ever existed in India before.
To find korfball near you:
Check the KPL website at korfballpremierleague.com — club and training information will be updated as Season 2026 approaches.
Contact the Korfball Federation of India for information on registered clubs and upcoming trials in your city.
Follow KPL on social media where regional club information and training announcements will be shared regularly.
What to Expect at Your First Training Session
Your first korfball session will likely cover:
Basic movement and passing — how to hold the ball, how to pass accurately at different distances and angles, and how to move without the ball to create passing options for teammates.
Shooting technique — the korf has no backboard, so shooting requires accuracy over power. Coaches will introduce the basic shooting positions and technique early.
Defensive positioning — how to mark a player, how to use the defended player rule, and how to read attacking movement to stay in a useful defensive position.
Small-sided games — most korfball training sessions use reduced-format games to give new players as much game-time experience as possible in a session.
Come comfortable and ready to move. Wear trainers suitable for an indoor court or outdoor grass. Bring water. And expect to run — korfball training sessions are physically demanding from the first session.
KPL Player Development: The Road to the League
One of the most exciting aspects of KPL Season 2026 for aspiring players is what the league represents as a pathway.
KPL will not just be a competition to watch — it will be the top of a player development pyramid that starts with grassroots clubs and builds toward professional franchise squads. As the league develops, talent identification programmes, academy structures, and trial processes will create formal routes from beginner korfball to KPL-level competition.
If you start playing korfball now — before Season 2026 begins — you are ahead of the curve. The players who will define Indian korfball for the next generation are out there right now, and many of them have not yet touched a korfball.
That player could be you.
A Sport That Needs You
Korfball in India is at a genuinely formative moment. The Korfball Premier League is launching. New clubs are forming. New players are discovering the sport every week.
Every person who starts playing korfball right now is not just picking up a new hobby — they are helping build something. A sport, a community, a league, a culture.
India's korfball story is being written in 2026. There is still room to be part of the first chapter.
